Dust Days

Today is my baby sisters birthday. She is 40 something. Happy Birthday Dearest, I love you!!KISA had Friday and Monday off so we have just had a four day long weekend. Some of you may have experienced or heard about the dust storms affecting the east coast of Australia this last week. Well they have even come this far north, though not with the severity of that experienced in Brisbane and Sydney. We had a dusty day during the week and the second one arrived overnight Saturday. We woke up to a pinkish dawn. That grey is not cloud, it is dust. It looks like a British sky though. Ours is meant to be bright blue! Later in the day it looked like a fog. It was hot, windy and dusty. Everyone's cars are filthy, and the houses are filling up with dust. Lucky I have been slack with my dusting and the Dyson is off getting serviced in Brisbane, so at least I will only do it once. Our neighbours hosed and scrubbed their exterior walls last week and their windows. Just two days before the first dust hit.
So it was an indoor weekend with the windows shut till the worst of the dust clears. I set to and made some stock and a couple of batches of soup. Cauliflower soup, lamb and vegetable
and Chicken and corn soup.

We ordered another door to match the sliding door upstairs as we are going to start using the real front door. We couldn't remember the stain, so the shop gave us a sample or two to bring home. We decided it was dark oak.

We gave the old white IKEA bookcase to the Leukaemia Foundation for their new Mackay office, so we shuffled around the wall units to accomodate the now homeless books. The big tall unit near the real front door went to the downstairs bedroom to put the books in, the wall unit downstairs came upstairs and there was some culling of knick knacks and keepsakes and the unit was placed opposite its mate beside the window. That freed up the space near the front door. We also had to sort all the CDs and VHS collection to create space, so KISA digitised all the CDs so now they can ALL go out the door. And he will digitise the remaining VHS, mostly home videos of the kids, and they can go in the bin. Yay lots of space freed up. It only took him one day to rip all the CDs, now they are all on the media centre and we will actually listen to them again. Love that you can search the collection too now with the computer. Clever man.
This is the new tidy knick knack cupboard. Games and functional stuff below. Look at the empty space! Wonder how long that will last??
Still dusty today, so I cleaned out the pantry. That was a mess, so am now feeling very domestic goddess and virtuous today. Some of the useby dates were scary! The Dyson was returned by courier this afternoon all fixed just in time to clean up after all that cupboard sorting. Tomorrow I will be tackling the layer of dust on everything and when the skys turn blue again we will have to wash the cars! Lets hope we get rain soon and there is no more dust!!!

Light The Night

I may have mentioned in the past that I do a bit of volunteer work for the Leukaemia Foundation. Once a week I help the local fundraiser/ public relations officer with her admin and the work. I love it as I can give something back to the foundation, because it is work relevant to the degree I did and it is a taste of the career I never pursued, and because Julie is such fun to work with and knows absolutely everything about Microsoft Office and has promised to teach me!
On the 8th of October, is an nation wide event called Light The Night. We are getting very busy with the organising of it and today was the local media launch to drum up registrations and create public awareness. It went really well after a few last minute glitches in the set up phase yesterday. The premise of Light The Night is a public awareness and memorial event for patients and their families and supporters of the foundation. At dusk, a convoy of walkers holding lighted balloons (quite ingenious devices) will walk around the Gooseponds, a local walking track. There will be entertainment and food and some speeches. A blue balloon signifies support, a white balloon signifies survival and celebration, and a gold balloon signifies a lost one and memory. The media all came and we all got our chance at being media tarts. Patsy surprised herself by being a natural, here she is giving her first interview to the local ABC radio. Patsy's sister is currently undergoing treatment. Here Julie is giving some background to the local newspaper reporter. And this little one is a survivor, with her Mum. She is the best hugger I ever met!!

So for those of you dear readers who are local, I will be on Win News tonight, the local paper and ABC radio breakfast tomorrow morning. And please sign up come and walk and show your support and remember Jess!

A trip, an anniversary and a birthday

Last Saturday the 5th, KISA and I headed off to Brisbane. He had a conference on the Gold Coast to attend, and rather than rattle around the house alone, I figured I would go too and hang out in Brisbane and catch up with some friends and family. On the early evening flight we were able to watch the full moon rise. It looked different from up high, you could see much more of the reflected moon in the ocean. Of course the photos hardly do it justice. So that day we watched the sunrise and the moonrise over the water. Hard to see in this one, but it lit up the night sky quite remarkably.
With a bit of zoom you can see its orange deliciousness. It was quite a sight.
Son 17 picked us up from the airport and after dropping off our bags, we met up with TBS at Sugi Mi in Oxford street Bulimba for a pizza. They had been to family movies in the park. It was the most delicious pizza I have ever had. Without a doubt.
The following morning we went to church and caught up with our friends there afterwards. Then KISA had to head off to the conference and Nette and I took Nana to see Young Victoria. It was a lovely film, the costumes were beautiful. Nana enjoyed it, and so did we.

During the week I caught up with Alison, Jason, Wendy, Jill, Jules, Kaylene and Helen. I kept taking my camera with me and kept forgetting to take photos! So I only have one catchup photo! This is me and Wendy. This is the second time we have caught up in 33 years. The first time was in January!
On the Wednesday, I travelled to the Gold Coast to join KISA for a night to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary. While he was finishing up at the conference, Jill and I renewed our friendship after about 20 years. We met in PNG when our Jessica's were in pre school together. She has posted a lovely photo of the girls on her blog here. We had a wonderful afternoon, and barely got started! I hope I have talked her into a visit up here some day. Jill dropped me at the hotel, and KISA and I shared a bottle of Chandon at the bar before getting ready for our meal at the italian restuarant at Jupiters. It was a lovely meal. We shared a delightful evening. After breakfast next morning, we popped over the road to Myers and purchased a coffee machine. Myers will post anything to anywhere in Queensland for $8. It arrived today.

Then KISA had to get back to the conference and I caught the train to Brisbane city to catch up with Jules. We spent the afternoon shopping, and I would never have figured Jules to be such a bad influence on my wallet!!

Friday morning was an early start. Itwas Son 17s 18th birthday and he had to catch a train at 6.50am for an 8am exam. We shared some time at breakfast then I drove him to the station planning to meet up in the early afternoon for a coffee. I then went in with T to the city for an hour or so before making my way to Kelvin Grove to catch up with Kaylene, a work mate from the late 70s. It had been 30 years since we caught up. This, my 50th year, seems to be a year for renewal of old friendships. I am loving it as it seems those friendships of my youth are just as valid today as they were back then. Although we have all taken varying paths in life, the core values that made us friends in our teens and early twenties have endured.

Son 18 called. Five of his best mates from Mackay had driven down during the night and surprised him as he came out of his exam. I wouldn't be seeing him after all. I was glad as he was kind of resigned to a rather quiet birthday doing 2 exams and hanging out with the family. He turned out to have a fantastic weekend, which is how it should be at 18. On the way home I hung around South Bank station with a good book as KISA was on his way back. We travelled the rest of the way together where the car was waiting to lug his case back to TBSs place.

Early next morning around 6.30am we got a text from Son 24 to ask if we wanted to join him for breakfast. He hadn't been able to sleep so was up early. He took us to Atomica in West End. If you haven't discovered it already, it does the most fabulous breakfasts. Son 24 had the big breakfast, KISA had the omelette and I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. Three poached eggs, loads of smoked salmon and 3 pieces of sourdough bread for $15. I would like to say I couldn't eat all that. But I would be lying. The good news is I didn't feel like lunch and could probably have skipped tea as well if we hadn't been going out for Son 18s birthday.

We all met up at the Pineapple Hotel at Kangaroo Point for the birthday dinner at 5.15pm. The Riverfire Fireworks were on and we wanted to get ahead of the traffic and get a park. Son 18 wanted a big steak so we chose this place as it had a good review, which was well justified. He got the 700g T Bone.KISA took the camera and took a few shots of the table. Isn't this a handsome couple.
One of me and the two boys and Miss R. Not a shot we can get too often these days.
Nana came along too, it is nice she can be part of things now she lives in Brisbane.

TBS enjoying the meal. The food was lovely though the servings were massive. The Riverfire started just as we were finishing up the mains. We had a good view of some of the Story Bridge fireworks and the F111 flyover with the afterburn was spectacular. No photo as I wasn't watching the time and it caught us unawares!!

KISA and I drove Son 17 to the Valley to join his friends after dinner, and then we went home to a quiet evening with TBS. Next morning, we packed up our cases and spent a quiet morning with TBS and KISA wasn't feeling well. He had a sore throat which he has now given me. TBS had to go to S's hockey team BBQ and breakup around 11am. Don't they look spiffy in their matching polos??

So KISA and I went to pay a last visit to Nana then to Son 24 and the Divine Miss R at their place with Son 18, who had been dropped home by his mates on their way to the highway north. They had to get back to Mackay for work the next day. They didn't look up for that sort of a drive!! But they made it back.

This is Pivot. She is a movie star. You wouldn't know it to look at her would you. So cute, but a demon at kung fu. I have discovered the red eye setting on the camera only works on humans. The boys, Miss R, KISA and I went to the Sushi Tram for lunch, then we went back to TBS for a spell before Son 18 drove us to the airport.

Someone got the departure time on Sunday confused with the departure time last Saturday, so we were there a little early. Even for me! But the time went by as it does in airports and we had time for an evening meal so we didn't have to worry about it when we got home. We got in about 9.15pm after sharing a cab with the parents of one of Jess's friends, so we had a social time even on the cab ride home! A great week, but it was good to get home and spend Monday getting things organised here.

Kisa's new work uniforms were ready when we got back. These ones are 3 sizes smaller than what he has been wearing. He looks pretty fine in the new set.

Gratuitous rear end shot. Phwoar!!!

Good Morning Sunshine!

On Thursday night, KISA got only two hours sleep, as work rang him at 2am and we had had a "Life on Mars Series 2" fest before bed. He couldn't get back to sleep, so he got up and went to work. I got up too. As a result, we both were sound asleep by 8.30pm last night and then both wide awake at 4.30am this morning after a very good nights sleep each. So we went to the drive through at Maccas, got a coffee and went to the harbour to watch the sunrise. So we thought we would share it with you. Notice how it was brightest just before the sun peeped over the horizon.

Good morning from our little corner of the world.

Destressing KISA

KISA has just come through "the month from hell" at work, and is still not really out of the woods yet, but he was able to at least take last Friday, Monday and Tuesday off work. All he wanted to do was get as far away from mobile phone coverage as he could. So we went to the dam for four nights. I know I said last time we would try somewhere different, so you, dear reader, would not get bored, but this was an important trip as we had to destress KISA. He is wound up like a spring, hardly sleeping and working at least 12 hour days. It can't go on. So first thing Friday morning we packed up the car, watered up the camper and hit the road. We got up to the dam about 11 and were all set up by lunch. We even set up the ensuite which we usually leave till day two, but we had all afternoon. It is a loo with a view this trip. As there were hardly any other campers this weekend, we mostly left the door open too!

This is the lakeview window. We line this up so we can see the lake from bed. You can see inside the tent to the bed. As we haven't slept in it yet it is still tidy. There is a reason you haven't had any inside shots of the tent yet!

Sitting under a tree doing some light reading. He is starting to destress a little.

As soon as the golden orb goes behind that hill, the temperature drops 5 degrees in 5 minutes. Then it is time to unscrew a bottle of wine. Ah feel the serenity!

The birdlife was starting to wind down too. This fellow was going for a sunset glide across our view.

We spent a leisurely evening by the fire with two bottles of red. Made tandoori chicken over the fire with naan over the fire as well. With a bit of vegetable curry and rice brought from home on the side.
I was woken in the night by lots of splashing noises. Then some snorting that was very close by. Spooky if it was your first trip up here and didn't know that a small herd of horses grazed the camp ground and are particularly fond of the water weed. I thought they slept at night, obviously not! Later that day, they were still at it. This guy took a short cut.
We cooked each of our evening meals over the fire KISA kept going the whole time we were away. On the Saturday night I tried a roast lamb, and it turned out very well. Very tender. On the third night we had stew and again it worked well. Each lunch we made jaffles over the fire too. We only really used the gas for breakfast. I really love cooking with cast iron. I am thinking of getting a couple for the kitchen at home. The stand over the fire helps with keeping the temperature reasonable. The stew tasted a lot better than it looks in this picture. Still have leftovers!
We didn't do much activity wise. Just the usual reading, wood hunting and chopping, firetending stuff. We both find it relaxing and that is why we do this. It was very hot this trip though, mid thirties during the afternoons, which means it will be the last trip up here for a while. With the heat came lots more flies than usual and the snakes are waking up soon. Once the sun went down it became more comfortable, and by 8pm we had a jumper on. We both slept well each night though. Went up to the lookout for an outing and to see from above how many other campers there were. There were 3.
Time flew and before we knew it we were watching our last sunset. KISA put all the wood leftover that he couldn't fit in the camer on the fire and it roared till we went to bed. Had potatoes in the coals with Stagg Chilli and cheese. Simple but yummy meal.
Even the kookaburra came by to see us off.
Here is much more destressed KISA on our last night. On Tuesday morning it looked like rain, so we wasted no time packing up as soon as the canvas was dry. By 10am we were heading back along the dirt road to Eungella when the first drops of rain fell. We made it! The camper was having some electrical problems, so after dropping off our gear and getting a shower, we spent the rest of the day getting that sorted out and stocking up on a few things. Then KISA turned on his recharged phone and the calls started. By evening he was all wound up again and had a restless night. AAARRRGGGHHH!
